In a morning of announcements dignitaries and officials recognised the official start of construction a new $1 million preschool and childcare facility in Mudgee, with a sod-turning ceremony on Friday morning.
Mid-Western Regional Council Mayor Des Kennedy said the project will have a significantly positive impact on the region.
“Once complete, the centre will cater for 40 children per day, which will provide up to 200 additional preschool places and create 13 ongoing jobs,” he said.
“During construction, the local builder will be utilising other local suppliers and generating economic activity to further support the region’s growth.”
Cr Kennedy added the shortage of preschool places and availability of childcare has been a long standing issue for the region.
“We’ve been keeping a very close eye on this, for the last few years, there has been just one place available for every five children in the 0-4 years category.
“I’m very proud of this project after all Council’s hard work to provide a solution.
“We are thrilled that Restart NSW has recognised the importance of the project, and provided $1 million funding through the Cobbora Transition Fund.”
The project is being funded under the NSW Government’s $20 million Restart NSW Cobbora Transition Fund, which was established to create infrastructure that drives economic growth and productivity in the region.
Construction will begin almost immediately following the approval of the development application at Mid-Western Regional Council’s meeting last Wednesday evening.
Cr Kennedy officially recognised the start of building work with Member for Orange Andrew Gee, Deputy Premier Troy Grant, Lynch Construction Group Director Anthony Lynch and representatives from Gowrie, the approved operators of the centre.
Deputy Premier and Chair of the Cobbora Transition Fund Troy Grant, said, “this is an exciting time because this is the first sod-turning of a project which is shovel-ready”.
“I’m thrilled the Cobbora Transition Fund is supporting our thriving region and this is without doubt a great injection,” he said.
“This is a win for the local community generating jobs for the town in addition to providing a first class preschool facility for generations to come.”
It is anticipated that enrolments will open late this year for service commencement in 2016.
