Wine and local produce from the Mid-Western region will be showcased to NSW holiday makers in the new year, with Channel Seven’s Sydney Weekender filming in the region last week.

The episode, which will air in early 2017, will focus on all the gold winners from the recent NSW tourism awards.

The Awards celebrate and acknowledge tourism excellence in NSW. Now in their 27th year, the awards promote and reward tourism businesses that demonstrate outstanding achievement and success throughout the year.

Mudgee Region Tourism took out the Destination Marketing category last month.

“Reset Your Senses in the Mudgee Region” was part of a 2015 re-branding of the tourism marketing campaign for the region. The initiative encouraged visitors to take a break from everyday life and relax amongst the vines.

Sydney Weekender host Mike Whitney spent two days visiting the region with a camera crew saying people know a lot about Mudgee region wine, but I don’t think they know a lot about the rest.

“There are distilleries, beer, chocolate, honey and the cherries are unbelievable. All this other produce, it’s not only amazing but it’s the quality of the produce that’s coming out of the region – it’s as good as you get anywhere in the world.

“It’s not just, come to Mudgee and go to the wineries now. It’s come to Mudgee and go on the Farm Gate Trail and see ten different farms doing ten different things.

The Mudgee Farm Gate Trail encourages visitors to experience the region’s farmers and explore the participating farm gates and retail outlets.

“The region is just such a beautiful place to come. The drive up from Sydney was just gorgeous. I get sucked in by the beauty. The Mudgee region is just such a cool place,” Whitney said.

The crew suited up to experience the bees and honeycomb from Mudgee’s Honey Haven. Whitney had a go at making pizza at Mudgee’s Di Lusso Estate. The crew enjoyed the luxury at Horizon Mudgee and indulged in fresh olives at the Rylstone Olive Press.

After retiring from international cricket, Whitney first appeared on Sydney Weekender back in 1994. The NSW travel show, is now in its 23rd year.

Travelling around the city and through the length and breadth of the state, each episode investigates the best places to stay, eat and play.
