Mudgee’s winemakers have continued to cement their reputation as one of NSW’s preeminent wine growing regions with the release of the 2018 James Halliday Wine Companion.
James Halliday, long considered Australia’s doyen of wine, has awarded Mudgee’s Robert Stein Vineyard, Robert Oately Vineyard and Logan Wines the coveted 5 Star ratings.
Of these, Robert Stein and Robert Oatley were awarded 5 Red Stars, indicating an “Outstanding Winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”
“This is a fantastic result for Mudgee,” said Mudgee Wine Association President, Jess Chrcek. “The majority of our wineries received at least 4 Stars, with Lowe Wines and Huntington Estate both awarded 4.5 Stars.”
“We had many highly rated wines including:
- 2016 Robert Stein’s Riesling (96/100),
- 2016 Lowe ‘Nullo Mountain’ Riesling (95/100),
- 2014 Logan ‘Ridge of Tears’ Shiraz (95/100),
- 2015 Tim Stevens ‘Signature’ Shiraz (95/100),
- 2014 Heslop Touriga Nacional (94/100) and
- 2014 Ernest Schuetz Estate ‘Family Reserve’ Black Shiraz (94/100) .
“This shows the vast diversity of the region,” continued Jess, “with red wines, white wines, traditional and emerging varieties all receiving high ratings.”
Other recent commentary of Mudgee’s wines includes Toni Paterson, a Master of Wine and wine show judge who described the 2012 Huntington Estate Cabernet Sauvignon as, “…one of those great Australian wines that asserts quality and personality at a price that defies belief.”
As well as the great rankings in the 2018 Wine Companion, Robert Stein Wines has recently been awarded the Trophy for the Best Riesling at the 2017 Cowra National Wine Show.
“We are extremely pleased to see the ongoing success of our Riesling. The 2015 and 2016 produced lovely wines, however I think the 2017 vintage is the best yet,” commented Robert Stein winemaker, Jacob Stein.
“This wine has now received a trophy, along with a gold and two silver medals. Considering it’s only been in the bottle a month, it’s very promising and shows that Mudgee can be one of the premier Riesling regions in Australia.”
“It’s a period of real growth for Mudgee winemakers,” explained Jess Chrcek. “We are teaming up with Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine with a dinner in Sydney in September to showcase the region’s exciting diversity. This will be a flow through to the Mudgee Wine and Food Festival which brings to light our fantastic wine and food experiences.”
